Shirley Rae (Griffin) Simmons

Shirley Rae Griffin Simmons, 81, of Troy, NC and formally of Lumberton, died on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at home.

Shirley was born on January 31, 1942, in Columbus County, daughter of the late Creston McRae Griffin and Alberta Carter Griffin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Bruce Simmons, whom she was married for 56 years; siblings, Nathan Moore, Elroy Griffin, Edward Griffin, Linda Williamson, Violet Tinny Griffin and Susan Senora Griffin.  

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Worthington Funeral Home, with her son-in-law, Walter Dunigan officiating. Interment will follow in the Porter Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Cerro Gordo.

Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:30, prior to the service, at the funeral home on Sunday.

To cherish her memory, Shirley leaves behind her daughter, Kecie Melia Simmons Dunigan and husband, Walter, of Troy, NC; grandson, John Cole Thompson (Natalie Kallam); brother, Jack Griffin of Chadbourn, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
