Robert Carlton Grimes, Jr. age 79, of Benton Harbor, MI and longtime resident of Leland died on Monday August 1, 2023, at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Robert was born on March 10, 1944, son of the late Robert Carlton Grimes Sr. and Elida Erba Grimes.
Robert enjoyed a career in education of over 30 years after graduating with his master’s from Western Michigan University. He started and ended his career in Brunswick County as a teacher, coach, principal, and assistant superintendent. Robert was an advocate for the students and teachers until the time of his retirement in 2019. In his free time, he enjoyed working on rebuilding John Deere tractors and spending time outdoors. He was inducted into the Bangor Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.
Services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at the North Brunswick High School , with Elder Bryan Myers officiating. The family will receive friends following the service, at the school. Robert will be laid to rest in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery.
Robert is survived by his wife, Judy Ivey Grimes of the home; daughter, Alyssa Christina Grimes of Wilmington; granddaughter, Ivey Nichole Grimes-Locklear; grandson, Steven Robert Malpass; siblings, Penny Grimes Popp, Judy Grimes Holmquist, Charles Ralph Grimes all of Michigan.
The family would like to thank all the Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center staff, especially his attending physician, Doctor Janice F. Dickerson for her excellent care and patience.
