Robert "Mitchell" Bowen

Robert “Mitchell” Bowen, 77, of Cerro Gordo, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 28, 2023, in the Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Whiteville, NC.

Mitchell was born on in Columbus County on January 9, 1946, son of the late Robert Nelson Bowen and Lottie Sellers Bowen.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, with Pastor Jeff Stocks officiating. Interment will follow in the Gowan Cemetery, Cerro Gordo.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 pm prior to the service at the church.

Mitchell honourably served his country in the United States Army, in the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. He worked for International Paper for 37 years, until his retirement in 2005. Since 2002, Mitchell was the owner and operator of Country Nursery in Whiteville. Mitchell was part of the leadership group that helped originate the Cerro Gordo Baseball over 40 years ago, and past President of the West Columbus High School Booster Club. He was an active member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where he served in many compacities over the years, including serving as a Deacon.

Surviving family includes his wife of 53 years, Judy Ann Whitehead Bowen of the home; a daughter, Janna M. Futrell (Jeff) of Elizabethtown; a son, Kevin M. Bowen (Christie) of Cerro Gordo; siblings, Harold Bowen (Brenda) of Whiteville, Catherine B. Nance (Rossie) of Castle Hayne; five grandchildren, Ashlyn Futrell, Alyssa Futrell, Ty Bowen, Jake Futrell, and Kenzie Bowen.
