Jack Dempsey Strickland age, 82 of Cerro Gordo died Monday, August 02, 2010 at the Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center in Whiteville. Final rites will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Cherry Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Josh Phillips, Reverend Elmore Strickland, and Reverend Brancie Stephens officiating. Entombment will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Horry County, he was the son of the late W. Pink and Martha Jannie Wilson Strickland and was also preceded in death by his brother, Gene Tunney Strickland and a son, William Barry Strickland. He served in the US Air Force from 1946 to 1947. He was founder and president of Wilson Farm Nursery, Inc. for 50 years. He was a member of the NC and SC Nursery and Landscape Association and also with the International Plant Propagation Association. He was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church where in past years he served as a Sunday School Teacher and on other Committees within the church. He served as Brotherhood Director of the Columbus Baptist Association and was a member of the Gideons and Fair Bluff Masonic Lodge. He served on the board of directors of Rivertown Bluegrass Music of Conway, SC. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Faye Edge Strickland; a daughter, Kathy Lucinda Strickland Thompson of Clinton; sons, Jack Ronald Strickland of Hallsboro; Benny C. Edge and wife, BJ of Cerro Gordo and Billy Glenn Edge and wife, Ann of Nakina; grandchildren; Rachel Thompson Kiaski and husband, Anthony, Ginger Edge Bass and husband, Michael, Chris Edge and wife, Jessica, Joey Edge and wife, Myra Jo, and Tonya Edge; great-grandchildren; Megan Victoria Bass, Lily Ann Bass, William Cole Edge, Jesse Ellis Edge, Brandon Edge, Andrew Kiaski and Emma Kiaski. Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice & Life Care Center, 206 Warrior Trail Drive, Whiteville, NC 28472. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn. No service information has been added.
