Mr. J.D. Jaymer Mercer of Whiteville died Thursday, August 19, 2010 at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton. Final rites will be held 4:00 p.m. Monday, August 23, 2010 at Grace Bible Church in Whiteville with Reverend Tony Ripley and Reverend Stuart Shumway. Interment will follow in the Wards Station Church of God Cemetery in Chadbourn. He was the husband of the late Thelma Bakeoven Mercer and the son of the late Willie Vann and Chellie Edwards Mercer. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Ilene Beese. Mr. Mercer was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy for twenty years until his retirement. Many friends will remember Mr. Mercer as an author of Christian poetry, publishing three volumes and finalizing the fourth volume. He is survived by a son, Jed Alvin Mercer of Mantua, NJ; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Ellie Brownlee. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn. No service information has been added.
