Houston Benton

George Houston Benton, age 86 of Chadbourn, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2022, in Loris, SC.

Mr. Benton was born on February 25, 1936, in Columbus County, to the late George Washington Benton and Lishia Lee Gore Benton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” Smith Benton and his grandson, Houston Lee Strickland; siblings, Ogilvia Elderdice, Mavis Gore, Kathleen Watkins, Raymond Benton, Charles Benton and Cliff Benton.

Mr. Benton served his country in the North Carolina National Guard for 33 years and was manager of Whiteville Building Supplies in Whiteville retiring in 1999 after 38 years of service.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Worthington Funeral Home with Reverend Tony Ward officiating.  Interment to follow in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. 

Visitation will be held from 2:00-2:45, prior to the service on Thursday.  

Houston is survived by his two daughters, Jackie Sue Suggs (Gene) of Tabor City and Rose B. Strickland (Corky) of Chadbourn; sister, Louise Ray of Tabor City; brother, Lloyd Benton of Whiteville; two grandchildren, Brianna Jean Suggs Throckmorton (Chris) and Cameron Neil Suggs; great-grandchildren, Liam Throckmorton, Charley Mae Suggs, Dallas Suggs.
