Hazel Gertrude Norris Edwards, age 84, from Chadbourn, went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday evening, January 5, 2022, at Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center in Whiteville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah Wonder and Eula Wright Norris, her husband, James Ernest “Charlie” Edwards, her brother, Forest W. Norris, and her sister, Esther Gregory.
Hazel was a member of Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist Church and was respected by her community. Prior to her journey with Alzheimer’s, she was well-known in the area for her talent and love of sewing. Her “green thumb” was evident by the flowers and plants in her yard. She loved her family and is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Coleman (Richard) and Terri McPherson (Willard); and her brother, Jake Norris; She was lovingly called “Mema Gertie” by her three grandchildren, Jason James (Frankie), Jessica James Hanks (Brad), and Brett Coleman, and to her great-grandchildren, Kyrston, Tyler, and Degan James, and Kaden and Kellen Hanks; and she was adored by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service honoring her will be held Saturday, January 8, 2022, at 3 p.m. at Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist Church, with a visitation at 2 p.m., prior to the service. Her body will be placed beside of her husband at the Mercer Cemetery. Preacher Buddy Seay and Pastor Willard McPherson will officiate.
