Miriam Jane Hughes Berry, age 76 of Clarendon, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Lifecare Center in Whiteville, NC, with family by her side. A native of Columbus County, Ms. Berry was born on February 20, 1943 to the late Gray and Ruby Stanley Hughes. Miriam was the widow of the late Henry Stanley Berry, who preceded her on July 25, 2019 and was also preceded in death by her siblings, Carol Hughes Canady and Furnie Hughes. Final rites will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Clarendon Baptist Church with Pastor Ryan Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Upon her graduation from college, Ms. Berry began pursuing a teaching career. She educated many young learners at the Chadbourn Primary School for several years. She along with her husband, Staley, worked in the Flue Cured and Burley Tobacco Markets in the accounting area for many years, in addition to their tax accounting preparation offices in Elizabeth City, Edenton, Hertford, the Outer Banks area, and at their home in Clarendon. Ms. Berry loved her Lord and she was a lifelong member of Clarendon Baptist Church, which she attended faithfully. To cherish her memory, Miriam leaves behind three Nieces, two Nephews, three Great-Nieces, and two Great-Nephews. Memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Angle House, 206 Warrior Trail, Whiteville, NC 28472.
