Margaret Peggy Hammond Powell

Margaret "Peggy" Hammond Powell, age 91 of the Cedar Grove community of Cerro Gordo, entered into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, August 3, 2019. Born on January 27, 1928 in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Alexander "Hammie" Hamilton Hammond and Fannie Blanche Stewart Hammond. She was the widow of Simpson Theo Powell. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Marilyn Powell Floyd; a granddaughter, Tracey Leanne Floyd; three siblings, Elizabeth H. Abbott, Mary Faye H. Inman and Russell Hammond. Funeral services celebrating Mrs. Powells life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the Gowan Cemetery, Cerro Gordo. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn. She was employed by Belks Department Store in Whiteville for 16 years and later as the store manager for Scotties Department Store in Whiteville for many years She leaves behind two daughters, Susan P. Blackwell and her husband, Johnny of Cerro Gordo and Amy P. Nance and her husband Terry Wayne of Fayetteville; two siblings, Vivian H. Inman of St. Pauls and Gail Hammond of Chadbourn; seven grandchildren, Joseph Powell, Jonathan Blackwell (Tonia), Timothy Blackwell, Page Floyd (Jennifer), Lori Blackwell, Trevor Nance (Courtney) and Alexandria Nance; six great-grandchildren, Jenna, Dylan, Chandler, Leah, Grayce, Aniston. Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn is serving the family.
